Study highlights staffing instability in nursing home ratings |
The impact of staffing instability on nursing home quality should be reflected in the Five-Star Quality Rating System published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, according to a recent UC Irvine-led study. “The Five-Star rating system serves as a vital tool for families and caregivers making critical decisions about long-term care options, and adding this measure will ensure that ratings more accurately reflect the quality they can expect,” said Dana Mukamel, a Distinguished Professor of medicine. “This information would also encourage nursing home operators to focus on staffing consistency, leading to better resident outcomes.” |

However, they can come with a host of side effects, including a serious one called tardive dyskinesia. The student regent is a full voting member of the UC governing board, representing students across the university’s 10-campus system, providing a student voice for every issue and decision before the board. All UC students are eligible for the position, which comes with a stipend and a waiver for all systemwide tuition and fees during the two-year term of service. The deadline to apply is March 10, and interested students can register for a Jan. 31 webinar to learn more from the current student regent and student regent-designate about the role and the application process. |

Scholarship recipient creates digital experiences |
As a double major in game design & interactive media and computer science at the Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences, third-year student Eric Patrick is making the most of his Julian Feldman Endowed Scholarship, which allows him to study without worrying about his family’s finances. The scholarship is paying wider dividends as well. Last spring, Patrick led the creation of a game called Convergence, which includes a live gravity simulation, allowing players to consume smaller planets as they grow into larger ones. He’s grateful for the chance to share his digital creations. “It’s fun for me,” he said, “but more importantly, it’s being able to see other people react positively to something I made.” |
