Study suggests adding uncertainty language to AI responses |
A new study by cognitive and computer scientists finds people generally overestimate artificial intelligence’s accuracy. But with some tweaks, says Mark Steyvers, a professor of cognitive sciences, AI’s so-called large language models can be trained to help users better distinguish fact from fiction. Currently, LLMs such as ChatGPT don’t automatically supply language in responses that indicate the tool’s level of confidence in its accuracy. “By modifying the language of LLM responses to better reflect model confidence,” Steyvers said, “users can improve calibration in their assessment of LLMs’ reliability and are better able to discriminate between correct and incorrect answers.” |

 | 2025 marks the Year of the Snake, which is associated with transformation, renewal and spiritual growth. The yearly celebration, with over three millennia of documented history, carries profound cultural significance that extends far beyond China's borders to countries including Korea, Vietnam and diaspora communities worldwide. Xiao Rao, who recently became an assistant professor of East Asian studies, has also written a timely essay on the history of the Chinese New Year’s medieval roots. |
