Brilliant Future campaign surpasses $2 billion goal ahead of schedule |

UC Irvine’s Brilliant Future campaign has surpassed its $2 billion fundraising goal eight months ahead of schedule, becoming the first philanthropic initiative in Orange County to achieve this milestone. It has also exceeded its alumni engagement target, fostering connections with more than 75,000 Anteaters. “The Brilliant Future campaign embodies UC Irvine’s vision for excellence and global impact,” said Chancellor Howard Gillman. “Thanks to the generosity of our community and the outstanding leadership of campaign chairs Jimmy and Sheila Peterson, we are setting new standards in education, research and healthcare. Their commitment ensures that UC Irvine remains a beacon of opportunity and innovation for generations to come.” |

Engineers Without Borders is a global volunteering platform for Anteaters |

Founded in 2002, Engineers Without Borders USA is a humanitarian nonprofit committed to global sustainable engineering projects. After reemerging post-COVID-19 pandemic in 2023, the UC Irvine chapter has provided volunteering opportunities for all students, regardless of background or engineering experience. “In many ways, students are driven by the desire to do good in the world,” said co-president Geoffrey Vander Veen, a third-year civil engineering major. “The goal of our club is to introduce people to different perspectives and ways of life that they wouldn’t have otherwise encountered and to broaden their horizons through really cool projects.” |

U.S. News names UCI Medical Center a Best Hospital for Maternity Care |

For the fourth consecutive year, UCI Medical Center has been listed by U.S. News & World Report as one of its 2025 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care, reaffirming its status as one of the nation’s premier hospitals for maternity care. Orange County’s only academic medical center has earned the highest available rating and is also regularly listed as high-performing in the U.S. News annual survey of top adult specialties. |

Registration open for President Drake’s final town hall |

 | President Drake will participate in his final UC systemwide town hall on Feb. 19. Hosted by Jen Bowser, chair of the Council of UC Staff Assemblies, and Dennis McIver, past CUCSA chair, this virtual event will give all UC staff an opportunity to hear from President Drake in advance of his retirement. Questions for President Drake will be accepted through Friday, Jan. 31. You must register for the event ahead of time, and submit questions by Jan. 31. |

Professor awarded $6 million Department of Defense research grant |

Yoonjin Won, an associate professor of mechanical & aerospace engineering, will receive a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense for her project to improve the efficiency of thermal management systems. “This project will build new approaches that use physics-based machine learning methods that can interpret and predict such flows, and enable the design of new systems that are currently impossible to develop using conventional engineering methods,” Won said. |
