Maia Tarnas, a Ph.D. candidate in public health, has received the prestigious Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Individual Predoctoral Fellowship, which she will use to support her research on the relationship between protracted armed conflict and cholera outbreaks in Yemen – a nation torn by over a decade of war whose epidemic is the largest in modern history. Said Tarnas, “I hope my work through this fellowship will help disentangle these mechanisms to aid preparedness efforts, support advocacy and accountability and ultimately reduce morbidity and mortality.” |

Scholarship student from Soledad prepares for career as change-maker |
While in high school in Soledad, an agricultural city in central California, Yessica Ornelas defied the higher education odds by taking dual-enrollment college courses and joining the local police Youth Explorers Program. Now a fourth-year scholarship student at UC Irvine, she has combined business administration studies with criminology, law and society. She hopes to work for both local and state government agencies to build more equitable communities before returning to higher education so she can mentor students. “Hearing the youth and what they want to achieve and seeing myself in them, I want to tell them it’s possible,” she said. “Don’t let anyone tell you it’s not, because you make your own path.” |
