Study suggests ways to improve wildfire readiness in Eastern Coachella Valley

A study led by the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health highlights the need for improved wildfire preparedness tailored to disadvantaged communities in unincorporated areas of the Eastern Coachella Valley. “Residents in ECV face unique challenges, from linguistic barriers to marginal government support,” said Jun Wu (above), a professor of environmental and occupational health. “Our findings demonstrate the importance of fostering community ties; collaborating with emergency services; and implementing multilingual, culturally sensitive education campaigns to boost risk perception and preparedness.”

Spine surgeon reflects on proudest case of 2024

UCI Health spine surgeon Dr. Sohaib Hashmi recently reflected on his proudest case of 2024, a surgery he performed to allow an otherwise young, healthy person to have an improved quality of life. "The case highlighted the critical role of collaboration, precision and advanced surgical techniques in achieving life-changing outcomes," he said.

Department of Logic & Philosophy of Science earns top spots in faculty rankings

The Department of Logic & Philosophy of Science faculty have earned top honors in the latest Philosophical Gourmet Report, ranking #1 in five specialties and placing among the top five schools in every area of research emphasis. The rankings are based on survey responses of 239 international philosophers who assessed the quality and reputation of current philosophy department faculty rosters in 31 specialties. "The Philosophical Gourmet is widely acknowledged as the leading reputational ranking for philosophy Ph.D. programs in the English-speaking world,” said James Weatherall, a Chancellor’s Professor and department chair for logic & philosophy of science. “Our first-rate showing reflects how LPS is perceived by philosophers at the best universities in the world.”
