James Nowick (pictured, right), a Distinguished Professor of chemistry, and Sophia Padilla, a Ph.D. candidate in chemistry, have designed a new family of antibiotics showing promise in fighting bacterial infections that kill an estimated 35,000 people in the U.S. each year. The new drug is a variation of vancomycin, which is used as a last resort for extremely ill patients. “The issue with antibiotics is this crisis of antibiotic resistance,” said Padilla. “We’re starting to target something that bacteria will most likely not evolve resistance to.”

In this edition of the Scholarly Values Anteater Insider podcast, Duncan Pritchard, Distinguished Professor of philosophy and Chair of the Year of Scholarly Values Committee, discusses these questions with Pramod Khargonekar, the vice chancellor for research and Distinguished Professor of electrical engineering & computer science.
