UC Irvine and Pratt & Whitney establish materials science center |
UC Irvine and aviation propulsion systems company Pratt & Whitney have established a center of excellence for solidification science and materials science to be housed in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. With Diran Apelian (above), Distinguished Professor of materials science and engineering, as its inaugural director, the center will focus on the metal and material processing challenges in the manufacturing of critical jet engine components, such as single-crystal turbine blades. “I am highly enthusiastic about this collaboration with Pratt & Whitney,” said Magnus Egerstedt, Stacey Nicholas Dean of Engineering at UC Irvine. “Not only do we expect great research to result in the broader material processing area, but I view this as an ideal model for how to structure university-industry collaborations.” |

Cardiac arrest symptom education needed, says maternal-fetal expert |
Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of pregnancy-related deaths. Yet it’s often missed. UCI Health cardiologist and maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Afshan B. Hameed spoke to California Surgeon General Dr. Diana Ramos about a lack of awareness that’s contributing to the problem. “The biggest gap we have is really understanding the fact that if anyone presents with cardiac symptoms, they need to be evaluated.” |

Dancing her way to success |
| | Cassidy Doan began ballet dancing at age 3, and thanks in part to three separate scholarships – the Thomas T. and Elizabeth Tierney Scholarship in Fine Arts, the William J. Gillespie Foundation Scholarship, and the Sylvia Reines Scholarship in Dance – she recently graduated from UC Irvine with a double major in dance and biological sciences. Although she plans to attend medical school to become a pediatrician, Doan also hopes to continue dancing professionally and teach dance classes for children. “I will dance until I die,” she said. “Even if my body can’t dance anymore, I want to pass on my knowledge.” |
