Led by a season-high 22 points by guard Justin Hohn, the men’s basketball team defeated Jacksonville State 66-61 on Sunday night in the second round of the prestigious National Invitational Tournament. With the win, the Anteaters advance to the NIT quarterfinals for the first time in program history and will host the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 6 p.m. this Wednesday in the Bren Events Center. The team improved to 30-6, its second 30-win season in program history and second under the helm of head coach Russell Turner. The Anteaters are just the eighth team in the nation to hit the milestone this season.

Small fellowships help grad student make big waves

Daniel Kahl

Even before Daniel Kahl finished his doctorate, his research was making waves, forcing scientists and policymakers to rethink conventional wisdom about how beaches shrink over time. He has presented his findings to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, members of congress, and various county and city officials, as they consider ways to combat coastal erosion and rising sea levels. Kahl credits his successful research endeavors to small, high-impact grants and fellowships like the Dean’s Leadership Council Community Impact Fellowship and the La Verne Noyes Fellowship Award, which funded his master’s degree. “I’m extremely thankful for those smaller scholarships because they gave me the opportunity to pursue research that makes a difference in our community, and they directly changed my life,” Kahl says.

Diversity statements at the University of California

UC System Provost Katherine Newman sent a message regarding diversity statements at the University of California. After careful consideration, the UC Board of Regents has determined that requiring stand-alone diversity statements in new recruitments is no longer permitted. More details can be found in the full letter, including guidance on how the University should, and will, continue to provide due recognition to prospective or current employees who wish to share how they have contributed to inclusive excellence.
