UC Irvine leads national survey of artificial intelligence’s role in education |
UC Irvine and foundry10 researchers recently led a national, mixed-methods investigation of parents’, teachers’ and adolescents’ perceptions of, use of and experiences with generative and more traditional forms of AI. The National Science Foundation supported the study. “Digital technologies have been moving fast, but generative AI models have hit society and young users at breathtaking speed. Everyone is scrambling to understand how our children may be impacted. Fortunately, our team was able to rapidly mobilize to directly ask adolescents, parents and teachers how they’re faring in this new age of AI,” said Candice Odgers, UC Irvine professor of psychological science and informatics (above left), who led the research with Gillian Hayes, UC Irvine Chancellor’s Professor and Robert A. and Barbara L. Kleist Chair in informatics (above right), and Jennifer Rubin, senior researcher at foundry10. |

A newly published study by UC Irvine researchers in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin provides insight into how Democrats and Republicans viewed the 2018 Senate hearings on sexual assault allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh. “The hearings provided a unique, real-time opportunity to examine how Americans across the political divide responded to the same content at the same time. In fact, on average participants reported being exposed to almost eight hours of news coverage of the hearings per day from a combination of media sources, and yet they ‘saw’ a very different hearing,” noted the study’s authors, Roxane Cohen Silver (pictured), Distinguished Professor of psychological science, medicine and public health; Emma L. Grisham (’22 Ph.D. in psychological science); Pasha Dashtgard (’22 Ph.D. psychological science); Daniel P. Relihan, postdoctoral scholar; and E. Alison Holman, professor of nursing and psychological science. |
