Recent federal visa program updates |
In recent days, the federal government has revoked and terminated the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) records of a limited number of F-1 visa holders at universities across the country, including at UC Irvine. Campus offices, including the International Center, have reached out directly to those impacted and are actively providing individual guidance and support. We encourage all international students and scholars to stay connected with the International Center. Additional resources are available to support our international community. The Graduate Division offers immigration and travel guidance that addresses common questions related to current immigration developments, travel and student status. New study maps hidden ways hate speech spreads |
A new study by researchers from seven universities – including political science professor Jeffrey Kopstein – dove deeply into two deplatformed subreddits popular among QAnon members. They found that while overtly antisemitic posts were limited to a small fraction of community members, implicit content could be traced to more than a third of the groups’ users. Published online in PLOS One, the study has implications for tracking fast-moving changes in community encoded language related to antisemitism and other group-based forms of hate, said Kopstein. |

Doctoral students and Medici Scholars Fabricio Cavero and Alyssa Wixson are weaving sustainability into their compositions. Cavero crafts instruments from clay, honoring pre-colonial intellect and his Andean ancestry. Wixson draws from nature’s soundscapes, from flowing water to the stillness of the Mojave Desert, exploring humanity’s connection to the environment beyond guilt or fear. Both artists are part of the Department of Music’s Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology program, and they invite audiences to experience music as a space for reflection, offering fresh perspectives on our relationship with our planet. |
