Second annual CicloIrvine draws thousands

On Saturday, UC Irvine and UCI Health teamed with the city of Irvine for CicloIrvine, a community-focused, car-free, open-street event highlighting a collective commitment to community engagement, sustainability and environmentally conscious travel. Participants biked, strolled or rolled along the northern border of campus to experience some of Irvine’s public spaces and local businesses, with live music, art displays and other family-friendly activities providing entertainment.

Report details COVID-19 effect on Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders

A report from UC Irvine, UCLA, and UC Riverside researchers addresses the negative mental health and economic impacts that Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders in California experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our report helps address a data gap that Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community leaders have expressed,” said Brittany Morey, the report’s lead author and associate professor of health, society & behavior at UC Irvine’s Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health. “Now we have the data to show the extent of the impact and provide some insight into what we can do about it.”

James B. Milliken named 22nd UC president

James B. Milliken, named 22nd president of the University of California

The University of California Board of Regents has approved the appointment of James B. Milliken as the 22nd president of UC’s world-renowned system of 10 campuses, six academic health centers and three nationally affiliated laboratories. Milliken will assume his role as UC president on August 1, 2025. He succeeds President Michael V. Drake, who has served as the University’s president since 2020 and who announced that he would step down this July.

Group of LIFTED graduates throwing graduation caps into the air

Undergraduate honors student Jesse Rinke is one of 18 students in the second graduating class of LIFTED, the UC’s first in-prison bachelor’s program. With his sights set on receiving a degree in sociology this June, he hopes to continue his love for learning as a graduate student and pursue research on how incarcerated individuals experience the system and access opportunities for self-improvement and personal growth. “I’ve never had so many people believe in me. It’s changed my life,” he said. “This degree, this program have shaped me into a better person.”
