Study links sleep apnea and memory loss |
UC Irvine neurobiologists found a critical link between obstructive sleep apnea and early signs of brain changes associated with cognitive decline. Their National Institutes of Health-supported study in Neurology suggests that low oxygen levels during the rapid-eye-movement stage of sleep may contribute to injury in brain regions vital to memory. “We may have found a missing piece of the puzzle. This might help explain why even mild sleep apnea can impact brain health long before memory problems show up,” said co-corresponding author Michael Yassa (right), professor of neurobiology & behavior and director of the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning & Memory, with co-authors Bryce Mander and Destiny Berisha. |

Motherhood and medical school |
Having navigated her way through medical school as a new mom, Remy Mercer Slomoff had her children by her side at the podium on Match Day to learn where she would perform her residency in psychiatry. “There is no doubt about it – medical school is challenging and demanding,” she said. “However, after becoming a mom for the first time, between sleepless nights, constant nursing, teething and incessant fear of messing it all up, the intensity of medical school didn’t feel as daunting.” Slomoff is staying local, having matched with the psychiatry program at UCI Health. |

Alumna Kim Goll is the executive director of First 5 Orange County, a public agency dedicated to improving the lives of California’s children and their families through a comprehensive system of education, health services, childcare and more. Having earned her master’s degree in urban and regional planning from UC Irvine, Goll said her degree training still pays dividends at First 5. “System design thinking is critical to what I do today,” she said. “We are trained to think about how what they are trying to achieve may affect other parts of the system.” |
