UC Irvine awarded dual designations in Carnegie Classifications |
UC Irvine has been awarded both the Research 1 and Opportunity College and University designations in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications, recognizing the university’s leadership in cutting-edge research and student success. Only 21 institutions nationwide earned this dual recognition, and UC Irvine is one of just three in the Association of American Universities – and the only AAU member in California – to achieve both honors. These dual designations affirm UC Irvine’s rare ability to combine world-class research with a deep commitment to access, equity and opportunity. |

Rejuvenation through reforestation |
The campus’s Sustainable Landscape Program emphasizes the installation of long-lived native plants and other shade trees to increase the diversity and long-term health of our urban forest while providing increased habitat for pollinators and other regional species. It also encourages ongoing replacement of our eucalyptus trees – the dominant species planted during the first two decades of campus development and whose lifespans are ending – with native California trees and other shade trees that provide ecological and environmental value. “It’s important for us to continue to protect the original vision of Aldrich Park and continue to invest in it,” said Matt Deines, principal physical planner for Campus Planning & Sustainability. |

Improving antibiotic selection |
Antibiotic resistance is a major public threat that makes infections harder to treat and adds risk to surgery and other procedures. Led by UCI Health, the INSPIRE Abdominal and Skin & Soft Tissue Trials found that computerized alerts about the best antibiotic match improved antibiotic selection for patients with abdominal or skin and soft tissue infections. “The INSPIRE patient-specific risk estimate gives more information than clinicians currently have to be able to choose standard-spectrum antibiotics, avoiding unnecessary exposure to overly broad-spectrum antibiotics,” said UCI Health infectious diseases expert Dr. Shruti Gohil, corresponding author of the study. |

UC alumni awarded Pulitzer Prizes |
Nine alumni hailing from four UC campuses were awarded Pulitzer Prizes last week by Columbia University in the categories of reporting, history, and nonfiction. The Pulitzer Prize is one of the most prestigious honors in journalism, literature and music composition. UC Irvine MFA alumna Stacy Kranitz won the prize for public service for her contributions to ProPublica reporting on pregnant women who died after physicians delayed urgently needed care out of fears that care would violate vague “life of the mother” exceptions in states with strict abortion bans. |

Across UC’s health system, nurses are at the center of the conversations around how AI can be integrated into the healthcare landscape to improve their professional roles and the experiences of their patients. Sitting on review and advisory committees that evaluate and select new technologies, many nurses note that using AI tools would help reduce administrative burdens and increase the time they spend in face-to-face interactions with patients. |

Dr. Shaista Malik, the founding executive director of the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, is the 2025 winner of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Orange County Woman of Impact award.
