Creating a more sustainable future |
|
The recently launched UC Irvine Climate Collaboration is a campus-wide effort to enhance interdisciplinary research, education and engagement focused on climate-related challenges. This initiative seeks to create opportunities for participation across campus and partnerships with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, businesses and communities to identify the most urgent challenges and promising opportunities in climate and sustainability. Climate collaboration grants are also open to all eligible faculty and are designed to advance solutions-oriented work in climate, resilience and sustainability. |

Devising wildfire solutions |

The School of Social Ecology and the Climate & Urban Sustainability Program recently presented “Igniting Solutions: What OC Can Learn from the LA Wildfires.” Speakers discussed the challenges exposed during January’s wildfires in Los Angeles County and ways to meet those challenges during future Southern California disasters. The seminar included opening remarks by Rep. Dave Min, three panels of experts from UC Irvine and the community, and a closing keynote address by Francisco Sánchez Jr., former associate administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Disaster Recovery & Resilience. |

NSF grant supports biomanufacturing project |

Han Li, associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, has received a $7.5 million award from the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships. The three-year grant will support Li’s development of a novel biomanufacturing process to make valuable organic pesticide chemicals in a more efficient, environmentally friendly and economical way. |

Improving early lung cancer detection |
|
|
The UC Lung Cancer Consortium and AstraZeneca have announced a five-year partnership to expand the Healthy Lungs California initiative. Its goal is to increase early lung cancer detection and reduce deaths from the disease. The partnership brings together researchers from across five UC campuses – UC Irvine, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego and UCSF. “We have a unique opportunity to break down barriers to early lung cancer detection and screening to improve outcomes for thousands of Californians,” said Arun Krishna, vice president, head of lung cancer at AstraZeneca. |

Denise Payán named Fulbright U.S. Scholar |
|
|
Denise Payán, MPP, PhD, associate professor of health, society, & behavior, has received the Fulbright U.S. Scholar award for the 2025-26 academic year. She will examine nutrition policy design and implementation in Australia in partnership with colleagues at the University of Sydney. This award is granted by the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. |

Graduate student honored by American Society of Engineering Education |
|
|
Melissa Lepe has been recognized with an Outstanding Graduate Student Award by the American Society of Engineering Education for her commitment to education in engineering-related areas. Lepe, a third-year mechanical and aerospace engineering doctoral student, works in the fields of engineering education and sustainable aviation. “We often think about technical research and engineering education research as two separate things, but really, it is important to develop diverse engineers who think profoundly about the impact of their work and effectively communicate that with others,” she said. |
