Falling Leaves Foundational Medical Innovation Building complete

On May 10, UC Irvine hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Falling Leaves Foundation Medical Innovation Building. Its completion marks a significant milestone in UC Irvine’s commitment to advancing medical research to predict, prevent and treat disease. Made possible by $53 million in generous philanthropic support from Adeline Yen Mah, MD, and Robert Mah, PhD, through their Falling Leaves Foundation, the 215,000-square-foot building will be one of the largest translational research hubs on the West Coast once it becomes fully operational in the coming months.

On May 20, the Paul Merage School of Business community came together to celebrate Merage Day – a moment to honor Paul Merage, the philanthropist and benefactor who gave the Merage School its name and who launched two decades of growth, innovation and impact. This video highlights the legacy of a visionary family, entrepreneur and philanthropist whose belief in the transformative power of education continues to shape our future, ensuring access, innovation and impact are not just ideals but everyday realities for our students and partners.

Mitigating heat exposure

The UC Office of the President has awarded $2.26 million for a four-year project examining heat exposure and its effects on elementary school children. Funded through UCOP’s Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis and UC San Francisco researchers will work with nine California public elementary schools to investigate current approaches to heat adaptation. They will also collaborate on strategies for mitigating heat exposure for school children. UC Irvine’s Andrew Penner, sociology professor, and Emily Penner, education associate professor, will lead the Anteater effort in Southern California.

Study finds lotion and perfumes chemically alter indoor air

Did you know that our skin creates a chemical cloud indoors that can affect the air you breathe? But new research from an international team shows that everyday products like lotion and perfume can actually calm that cloud down and that these products might help make indoor air a little healthier. The study appears in Science Advances. Manabu Shiraiwa, a UC Irvine professor of chemistry and co-corresponding author, played a key role in the research.

Online attackers actively targeting UC staff

In recent weeks, online attackers have increasingly targeted UC staff with attempts to steal from them by changing their direct deposit information in UCPath. The UC Digital Risk and Security team has provided executive briefings to the chief information officers, chief human resources officers and chief information security officers at the locations to protect the UC community. Ramona Agrela named CHRO to Know

Ramona Agrela

Ramona Agrela, chief human resources officer and senior vice president at UCI Health and vice chancellor of human resources for UC Irvine, has been named a Becker’s Hospital Review CHRO to Know. “As a member of both the chancellor’s and president’s cabinets, she plays a critical role in campuswide and health system decisions, with her vision driving talent acquisition, workforce planning, total rewards onboarding and organizational culture,” the publication said.
