Students showcase musical inventions at E-SONIC

Last week, students from across campus shared never-before-seen musical instruments at E-SONIC, the Engineering-Symphonic Orchestra New Instrument Competition hosted by the Samueli School of Engineering, Claire Trevor School of the Arts and the Pacific Symphony. The winning team, DUBS, dazzled the audience with the Dynamic Ultralight Beam Synth which harnessed the power of light and lasers to emanate synthesized techno sounds. “Engineering is often thought of as a cold and calculated field – I’m glad this competition brings out our creative sides,” said second-year mechanical and aerospace engineering student Kevin Xiong from the winning DUBS team.

UC-trained nurses tackle challenges in healthcare

This graduation season, 660 people are heading into the healthcare workforce with degrees from the University of California’s four schools of nursing. These nurses are dedicating their careers to improving and expanding access to healthcare for those who need it most. Cheyenne Matyac, who’s graduating this spring with a doctorate in nursing practice from the UC Irvine Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, is one of them. After graduation, she will work at a nurse practitioner residency program in primary care with UC Davis Health, serving low-income patients in the Central Valley. “My passion has always been to work in primary care, since there’s still such a big gap in access, especially in underserved areas,” Matyac said.

Katelyn Kong headed to the Women’s U.S. Open

Freshman Katelyn Kong has officially qualified for the 80th Women's U.S. Open Championship. She earned her spot after shooting a 9-under (69-66) at Soule Park Golf Course, winning the 36-hole qualifier. “Golf is such a mental game,” Kong said. “You really just have to stay present with yourself and be in the moment. But it’s also just a game. You have to have fun and enjoy it, because what is it without that?”

Matthew Landry named UCDC Presidential Faculty Fellow

Matthew Landry, assistant professor of population health & disease prevention, has been named a Spring 2025 UCDC Presidential Faculty Fellow, an honor awarded to 10 scholars nationwide. Organized by the University of California Washington Center, this fellowship supports faculty who are advancing research that can inform public policy and drive societal change. Landry’s selection as a UCDC Presidential Faculty Fellow reflects his ongoing commitment to aligning evidence-based nutrition research with public policy aimed at reducing health inequities.
