Remembering Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, a celebrated author who taught at UC Irvine

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, a celebrated author who taught at UC Irvine and was a perennial favorite for the Nobel Prize in literature, died yesterday at the age of 87. Ngũgĩ was a world-renowned writer and a powerful voice of freedom – his work often skewered the harsh sociopolitical conditions of his homeland, Kenya. The son of a goat-herder, Ngũgĩ rose from poverty to pen widely acclaimed plays, social commentary and novels, including a book written on toilet paper while he was imprisoned in his native land. “The world has lost one of its greatest writers,” said Chancellor Howard Gillman. “His work illuminated the lives and stories of an entire continent and gave a voice to hundreds of millions of people who, before him, had no voice.”

A collaboration between the Jack and Shanaz Langson Institute and Museum of California Art, ZotGPT and computer sciences undergraduate student Connor Tintorer is changing the game in art cataloguing. Under the guidance of Jehan Tillekeratne, Langson IMCA’s data analyst, Tintorer used ZotGPT API to develop an AI-powered program to analyze images of artworks and generate relevant keywords. This innovative partnership has opened up a new world of possibilities for AI-powered solutions in collection management.
