In 2016, Gabrielle Gussin joined UC Irvine as an assistant clinical research coordinator, which sparked her enthusiasm for pursuing a Ph.D. in public health. Then Gussin hit a roadblock. Just days after finishing her doctoral program applications to UC Irvine, at the age of 25, she received a diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system. “My treatment experience imparted many lessons that continue to shape my approach to public health today,” said Gussin, who was treated for Hodgkin lymphoma and was declared healthy and in remission before earning a Ph.D. in public health at UC Irvine in June. “It underscored the universal impact of health challenges, irrespective of one’s age or background.” |

Psychedelic therapy education |
UC Irvine is one of the first two state universities selected to lead the national push to integrate evidence-based, psychedelic-assisted therapy education into college courses. The effort will reshape how future healthcare providers approach some of the toughest mental health challenges – research increasingly supports the use of psychedelics in treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and addiction. Christopher Cleary, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and assistant clinical professor at the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, will lead the UC psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certificate program, a pipeline for training the next generation of advanced practice mental health nurses. |

Aspirin may harm patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases |
The results of a phase 3 clinical trial show that a daily low-dose aspirin does not reduce the recurrence of colorectal cancer liver metastases. Dr. Jason Zell, a hematologist-oncologist who was not involved with the study, said the results were disappointing, but they highlight the need for genetic testing, because earlier research has shown that some mutations respond well to aspirin. “At UCI Health, we’re doing exactly this. We’re trying to sequence every one of these patients and even go back several years and identify them and sequence as well,” he said. |
