Detecting dementia earlier

Aaron Bornstein

With a $4 million grant from the National Institute on Aging, Aaron Bornstein seeks to develop an inexpensive, easily accessible assessment for early detection of cognitive decline due to Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. “The idea is to create a test that people can do in their 30s, 40s and 50s and then continue throughout life so we can see the earliest possible sign that something’s not normal,” said Bornstein, an associate professor of cognitive sciences.

The nursing team of the UCI Health — Orange emergency department

The emergency department at UCI Health – Orange (formerly known as UCI Medical Center) has received the 2025 Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award. It is one of 100 hospitals in the nation to be awarded this year. “This award validates our ongoing commitment to advancing emergency nursing practice through evidence-based care, continuous improvement, and fostering a supportive work environment,” said Colette Baeza, director of UCI Health Emergency & Trauma Services.

Center of Excellence in Nursing Education

The recently established Center of Excellence in Nursing Education in the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing will serve as a hub for innovation, collaboration and professional development in nursing education – both within the school and across the broader health sciences community at UC Irvine. The center’s purpose is to address the educational needs of faculty, students, staff, preceptors and clinical partners, promoting evidence-based teaching, educational research and the advancement of nurse educators at every career stage.

Distinguished Professor emeritus receives highest honor

David A. Snow

David A. Snow, Distinguished Professor emeritus of sociology, has been named the recipient of the W.E.B. Du Bois Career of Distinguished Scholarship Award, the American Sociological Association’s highest honor. It recognizes a lifetime of work, outstanding commitment to sociology and research achievements that have reoriented the field. “Snow’s research over the last fifty years has transformed the way we think about inequality and social movements,” said David John Frank, sociology professor and chair.

Dr. Alexandre Chan, professor of clinical pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Munjal Acharya, associate professor of anatomy & neurobiology and radiation oncology in the School of Medicine, received the 2025 Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences Faculty Assembly Basic Science COHS Team Research Award. Selected by the COHS Faculty Assembly Interdisciplinary Research Ad Hoc Workgroup, the award honors faculty members in the Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences who work to advance health through interdisciplinary research collaborations.
