‘Mansion tax’ may cost California

A study from UC Irvine economists reveals that a Los Angeles tax law passed in 2022 intending to raise money for affordable housing may end up costing the county in the long run by flatlining commercial and luxury home sales and subsequent property tax collections on post-sale values. Dubbed the “mansion tax,” Measure ULA imposes a 4 percent tax on real estate sales above $5 million and a 5.5 percent tax on sales above $10 million. The findings draw attention to Measure ULA’s interaction with Proposition 13 – decreasing high-value real estate sales – creating consequences for future property tax revenue.

Forbes top 25 public colleges

UC Irvine is sixth among the nation’s public universities in Forbes’ top 25 rankings. The magazine’s determination is based on alumni salaries, academic outcomes and return on investment of students’ tuition dollars – all areas in which the university excels. UC Irvine was specifically lauded for its efforts to provide opportunities for all students. In fact, the campus’s 37 percent rate of graduates receiving Pell Grants – federal financial aid provided to students from low-income households – was the highest among the top 25 public institutions.

Speak Up for Science

Alongside the Stand Up for UC campaign, the University of California is highlighting the Speak Up for Science campaign. This initiative is dedicated to rebuilding federal support for U.S. research and innovation by advocating for long-term investments in the federal science agencies that fund more than half of UC’s research. Congress is currently considering fiscal year 2026 budget proposals that could cut funding for these agencies by as much as 50 percent. Such reductions would have a devastating impact on UC’s research enterprise. As September approaches – a critical time when Congress makes key funding decisions – your support in raising awareness will be more important than ever.

He is turning her story into a family memoir with support from three prestigious residencies.
