UC Irvine undergraduates experienced the beauty of Bali while immersing themselves in a month-long public health program

UC Irvine undergraduates experienced the beauty of Bali while immersing themselves in a month-long public health program. Supported by the Study Abroad Center, students and faculty from the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health combined coursework with community-based research and cultural exchange, gaining a deeper understanding of how health is shaped by culture, environment and global interconnectedness.

Research realities in the face of funding restrictions

Soundcloud podcast player featuring Aileen Anderson

In this episode of The UC Irvine Podcast, Aileen Anderson, vice chancellor for research, addresses the current state of federal funding. She talks about how cuts are affecting the research community at UC Irvine and globally, and what these changes could mean for the future of the university, and, eventually, the health of all Americans and the international reputation of the U.S. as a leader in science and innovation.

Eric Rignot, Distinguished Professor of Earth system science, is a globally recognized expert on the impact of climate change on Earth’s polar ice sheets. The researcher has been long funded by NASA, and he voices his concerns that cuts to federal funding support will threaten ongoing efforts to understand the dynamics contributing to the collapse of the Greenland and Antarctica ice sheets, along with humanity's ability to adjust to a changing environment. #SpeakUp4Science

Katherine Frields

Katherine Frields’ story starts when she and her brothers would play out the different parts of an ecosystem – only now the game also includes AI and climate system dynamics. As Frields’ path at UC Irvine unfolded, she joined the Data at UCI student group, took Earth system science classes, and applied her data science and machine learning knowledge in the research groups of ESS professors Angela Rigden and Michael Pritchard. As she enters her final year and submits applications for Ph.D. programs, Frields is set to continue her research into AI applications in climate modeling. “I’m excited to continue exploring the many scientific disciplines that weave together to form our understanding of the past, present and future of our planet,” she said.
