3-D artificial colon

Rahim Esfandyar-pour, UC Irvine assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science

A 3D artificial human colon can aid in colorectal cancer research and drug discovery, according to recent UC Irvine research in the Samueli School of Engineering. The model can mimic realistic cell behavior during cancer therapy evaluation and provides a cost-effective and ethical approach to test patient-tailored drug treatments and dosages. “Because our model more closely reproduces human colon biology, it could potentially be used to screen drugs or test treatments in a way that better predicts patient responses than animal models or simple cell cultures,” said Rahim Esfandyar-pour, senior author and assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science. #SpeakUp4Science

UC Nobelists set a new world record

In this video, UC President James B. Milliken shares that five UC-affiliated scientists won Nobel Prizes in the areas of medicine, physics and chemistry, including four UC faculty and one UC alumnus. UC is the first university in the world to have four faculty receive Nobel Prizes in a single year (the fifth is from an alumnus), and these scientists join a long legacy of UC laureates. The Nobel Prizes are tangible evidence of the work happening across the University of California every day to expand knowledge, test the boundaries of science, and conduct research that improves the lives of Californians, Americans and people around the world.
