Errol Arkilic, chief innovation officer and Beall Applied Innovation executive director, introduced Proof of Product to assist academic researchers in creating business opportunities enabled by their discoveries. The program offers $25,000 to $100,000 grants to researchers with promising discoveries. “The stature of the university is a function of its impact on society, and the impact on society is a direct result of turning research into products and services,” he said. |

Targeting the genes of parasitic snails |
Guiyun Yan, Chancellor’s Professor of population health & disease prevention, is leading research on schistosomiasis – a devastating parasitic disease that affects more than 250 million people worldwide. Yan is taking a fresh approach, focusing not on the parasite in humans, but on the snails that carry and spread it. The findings pave the way for innovative, genetics-based methods to reduce or even eliminate schistosomiasis transmission. Instead of relying solely on drug treatment, this research opens the door to controlling the disease at its source – protecting vulnerable communities around the world from one of the most widespread neglected tropical diseases. Funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases helped support the work. #SpeakUp4Science |

UC faculty and alums behind TIME's Best Inventions |
TIME magazine recently released its Best Inventions of 2025, highlighting the emerging technology and products that are “changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.” UC faculty and alums are behind more than a dozen of the inventions on this year’s list, with contributions to aerospace, health, agriculture, computing and more. Michael Leon, emeritus professor of neurobiology and behavior, was specifically lauded for his help with creating Memory Air, an over-the-counter device that delivers a curated sequence of 40 scents throughout the night. Leon’s research revealed that stimulating the sense-of-smell center of the brain during sleep can dramatically improve memory consolidation. |

In American politics, perception often matters more than preference. That tension – between who voters say they support and who they believe can actually win – sits at the center of Pharrell Allen’s research. The political science Ph.D. student combines political insight with a passion for research to examine how perceptions – not preferences – shape electoral outcomes for Black candidates. “Pharrell Allen is one of the most promising Ph.D. students that I've ever had the pleasure of working with,” said Michael Tesler, professor of political science. “He is a smart, dedicated and skilled researcher, who after just one year in graduate school, is already producing publishable papers poised to make important contributions to the political science literature on race, gender and political representation.” |
