When Harwood Garland first stepped onto the UC Irvine campus as a returning veteran, he never imagined that he would one day be recognized by the California Assembly as a Veteran of the Year. At a Nov. 4 ceremony hosted by Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, Garland – a public health Ph.D. student – was honored for outstanding service to his country, community and fellow veterans. “He’s not only advancing critical research on military veteran suicide prevention but also mentoring students, advocating for resources and shaping programs that strengthen UC Irvine’s support network for those who’ve served,” said Dani Molina, director of the Veteran Services Center. |

Veterans Day resource guide |
The UC Irvine Libraries host a variety of resources and research related to U.S. military veterans and related topics. In recognition of Veterans Day, the Libraries created a guide of available online resources, archival materials and media, and recent acquisitions that document the history of those who have served. While some materials are restricted only to those with a valid UCInetID, most are accessible to the public as part of UC Irvine Libraries' ongoing commitment to promote learning and enhance access. |

Where scholarship meets service |
UC Irvine has long been committed to supporting student veterans’ transitions into higher education. In 2019, the campus expanded its one-credit “University Life 101” course aimed at helping veterans adjust to college life into a Veterans Studies Certificate Program – a three-part course sequence open to both student veterans and non-veteran scholars. In a roundtable article for the Journal of Veterans Studies, program founders Bill Maurer, dean of the School of Social Sciences, and Anita Casavantes Bradford, Chicano/Latino studies and history professor, reflect on veterans studies academic programs and initiatives while looking ahead to opportunities within this scholarly discipline. |
