When a doctor finally told her she needed immediate spine surgery, Vulena Xiong didn’t know whether to feel relief or fear. For years, she’d lived with chronic back pain that her family explained through spiritual causes. Her older sister had insisted something was wrong – pushing past their mother’s doubts and the traditional Hmong belief that healing belongs in the hands of a shaman, not a surgeon. Her mother eventually found a job with a health insurance company and agreed to the procedure, allowing Xiong to get the surgery she needed. The experience opened Xiong’s eyes to the barriers that keep many families – especially in immigrant and low-income communities from getting the care they need – and set her on the path to becoming a doctor. Now a third-year public health sciences major on the pre-med track at the Joe C. Wen School of Population and Public Health Sciences, Xiong is pursuing that dream with a scholarship from the Laguna Beach branch of the American Association of University Women, a national organization that advances gender equity through research, education and advocacy. |

Leadership and local impact |
California is entering a pivotal moment in early reading development, with new statewide policies requiring evidence-based literacy screening for all K–2 students starting this fall. At the center of this work is Young-Suk Kim, professor of education, who chairs the State Board of Education’s expert panel responsible for selecting the screening tools districts will use. Her leadership helps ensure schools adopt research-backed assessments that accurately identify students’ needs and guide early intervention. |
