Climate change-driven nutrition gaps |

Environmental factors driven by climate change are shaping what ends up on Americans’ plates and how nutritious it is, according to a new study from UC Irvine researchers. “Environmental change is not only an ecological issue. It’s a nutrition and public health issue,” said Margaret Nagai-Singer, first author of the paper and a research fellow in Wen Public Health. “When the food system becomes less stable or less nutritious, people feel it in very real ways – in their health, their medical costs and their daily lives.” |

Are menopause test kits worthwhile? |
|
|
Menopause kits are in great demand for women who want to determine whether their reproductive years are coming to an end. With over-the-counter and online kits going for $30 to more than $500, it is a very lucrative market. But are they worth the cost? Dr. Rebecca M. Sauer, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist who leads the UCI Health menopause program, has doubts. While the kits can accurately detect certain hormone levels, the results by themselves aren't enough to diagnose menopause. “These kits are not necessary for a patient to talk about their medical issues and advocate for themselves,” said Sauer. “It’s important to see a health provider who is experienced in perimenopause and menopause to address their concerns.” |

Ngoc Le, a political science major, is fast-tracking her way to a Ph.D. while discovering the joy of research. “Ms. Le is not only a student who achieves the highest grades but also has a great eye for interesting extensions of extant literatures that will make her a formidable academic social scientist after her doctoral training, which is her next milestone in her academic journey,” said Constantine Manda, assistant professor of political science. |
