Criminology program earns national ranking

Charis Kubrin (far left, second row) and Amanda Geller (bottom, right), co-directors of the university’s top-ranked online M.A.S. program in the subject, flank the newest cohort of M.A.S. students.

For the ninth consecutive year, the Master of Advanced Study in criminology, law and society has earned a spot among the nation’s elite online criminal justice programs, placing second in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 rankings. “This sustained excellence doesn’t happen by accident,” said Jon Gould, dean of the School of Social Ecology. “Year after year, our faculty push the boundaries of what online education can achieve, while our staff ensure every student receives the support they need to succeed. This ranking reflects their tireless commitment to our students and to advancing the field of criminology.”

How to navigate an active flu season

With cases of a highly active flu virus on the rise across Orange County, there’s still time to get a flu shot, said Dr. Susan S. Huang, medical director of epidemiology and infection prevention for UCI Health. “The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu is to get vaccinated. It’s not too late. Vaccination is recommended for almost everyone from the age of 6 months on up, and it is particularly important for children under age 5, for whom the flu can be deadly,” Huang said.

Differences between two causes of heart valve narrowing

(Arash Kheradvar (left) and Gregg Pressman of Jefferson Health – their teams collaborated to underscore differences in two prevalent forms of mitral valve stenosis in the heart.)

UC Irvine researchers have identified fundamental structural and functional differences between two major causes of the narrowing that restricts blood flow through the heart. The findings challenge current diagnostic approaches and may help clinicians tailor treatment decisions for a growing patient population. “For decades, mitral stenosis has been assessed using a one-size-fits-all approach,” said senior co-author of the study Arash Kheradvar, professor of radiological sciences, biomedical engineering and medicine. “But MAC-related stenosis behaves differently. The valve structure is different and blood flow patterns are different, and the relationship between anatomy and severity doesn’t follow the same rules.” Funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation helped support the work. #SpeakUp4Science
