UC Irvine Libraries’ latest exhibition, “Dawn of a Campus

UC Irvine Libraries’ latest exhibition, “Dawn of a Campus,” will showcase excerpts from a special edition of the Orange Coast Daily Pilot newspaper published on that first day. Harnessing the healing power of art

Should you find yourself inside the new UCI Health – Irvine acute care hospital feeling calm and contemplative as you enjoy a scenic mural, that’s no accident. Each of the 1,465 works of art displayed throughout the seven-story building and the rest of the medical complex was chosen with care and consideration for the emotions they would evoke. “We care about how you feel when you walk into our space,” said Ellen Khoudari, senior project manager at UCI Health. “Each piece was chosen or created to promote comfort, connection and belonging.”

A new study by UC Irvine researchers of the continuing use in California of the pesticide methyl bromide – a known developmental, neurologic and respiratory toxin – found that the compound remains in widespread use across the state. In 2005, the U.S. government recommended the phaseout of MeBr because of known health and environmental impacts – these include cancer, respiratory issues and damage to the kidneys, skin and liver, with particular risk to both adults exposed in the workplace and children. The work was supported by the National Institutes of Health through the Southern California Center for Children’s Environmental Health Research. #SpeakUp4Science
