| Pastry chef Jorge Sotelo (above left) is glad he insisted on the colonoscopy that caught his colorectal cancer at an early, treatable stage. Now he and his surgeon, Dr. Valery Vilchez Parra (above right), are taking to the airwaves to raise awareness among Spanish-language communities about the need for regular screening. “That’s how you beat this disease – by catching things early before they turn cancerous,” Sotelo said. "When I was first diagnosed, I shared that with my brothers, my friends at church, my colleagues at [work], and they went to get their colonoscopies right away.” |

| Even after one of California’s largest cleanup efforts, nearly 70 percent of remediated homes near the former Exide battery smelter in Southeast L.A. still exceeded the state’s soil lead limit, according to a new study from UC Irvine researchers. Community- driven research helped expose ongoing contamination, prompting expanded testing, blood lead screening and stricter remediation oversight. “These neighborhoods are predominantly low-income, largely Latino and home to more young children than the county average, yet [many] yards the state declared ‘clean’ still exceed its own safety threshold,” said Jill Johnston (above), associate professor of environmental and occupational health and the study’s corresponding author. “That’s a systemic failure in how this cleanup was designed and verified. The community knew something was wrong – and the data proved it.” The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Interdisciplinary Research Leaders program and the National Institutes of Health helped support the research. #SpeakUp4Science |

| Devon Zangger, who earned an M.A. in teaching at UC Irvine in 2017 and is now a fourth-grade teacher at Irvine’s Solis Park School, has been named Elementary School Teacher of the Year by the Irvine Unified School District. Zangger was cited as exemplifying what it means to lead with heart, excellence and purpose, creating classrooms where every student feels valued and inspired.
