Mapping urban heat

Jason A. Douglas, associate professor of health, society and behavior.

More than a third of parks and recreational spaces in South Los Angeles hit or exceeded the human thermal pain threshold, while none in West Los Angeles did, according to a new study from UC Irvine researchers. The findings determined that South Los Angeles parks were built with far more heat-retaining materials, such as artificial turf and concrete, than those in West Los Angeles. “Parks are often thought of as cooling refuges during extreme heat,” said Jason A. Douglas (above), associate professor of health, society and behavior. “But in some underserved communities, the parks that should provide relief are actually exposing residents to dangerous levels of heat.” NASA supported the work. #SpeakUp4Science

60th Anniversary video

Daniel Aldrich walked through an empty campus in 1965 and described a university that didn’t yet exist on a KNBC public affairs program called “Birth of a Campus.” In 2026, UC Irvine’s Strategic Communications team worked with Beall Applied Innovation’s NarrA.I.tive Story Studio to create the “Powered by Possibility” video for our 60th anniversary, using tools Aldrich couldn’t have imagined to describe a university still in the act of becoming.

A match made in - and for - California

At Match Day ceremonies across California, hundreds of UC medical students gathered with family, friends and mentors – counting down the final moments before opening the signature envelope that would reveal where they will spend the next phase of their training. More than 740 UC medical students matched into residency programs. Nearly three-quarters will continue their training in California, helping address the state’s physician workforce needs. Saman Andalib, a student at the UC Irvine School of Medicine, matched into orthopedic surgery at UC Irvine, bringing experience developing AI tools to improve patient education and clinical decision-making.
