Now in its 10th year, Giving Day was a huge success, thanks to the collective generosity of the Anteater community. Alumni, employees, students and friends gave a record 4,927 gifts, contributing more than $5.38 million to campus programs and UCI Health initiatives. “Giving Day reflects the very best of UC Irvine: our shared commitment to lifting one another up,” said Brian Hervey, vice chancellor for university advancement and alumni relations. “For 10 consecutive years, our community has demonstrated that collective generosity can create real, lasting impact across campus and UCI Health. And what’s most exciting is that we’re just getting started.”

Olivier Rioux, who stands at 7-9, is transferring to UC Irvine to join the 10-time Big West champion men’s basketball program. While playing at the University of Florida, Rioux became the tallest player in college basketball history in his collegiate debut against North Florida last season. "We are excited to welcome Olivier Rioux to our program," said head coach Russell Turner. "Olivier is a high-character young man whose presence will elevate our team, our university and our community. His unique skill set and physical presence align perfectly with the tradition of dominant front court players in our program. We believe he will have an immediate impact and continue to grow within our system, and we are thrilled to have him join the Anteater family."

Acupuncture’s potential in treating Alzheimer’s disease

Xiangmin Xu, Chancellor’s Professor of anatomy and neurobiology and director of the Center for Neural Circuit Mapping

Can the prick of a needle help heal a diseased brain? It’s possible, according to a new study from UC Irvine researchers. Alzheimer’s disease remains a leading cause of dementia with limited treatment options and no cure, and it imposes a substantial burden on patients and their families. “Alzheimer’s disease remains a major unmet medical challenge, and there is strong interest in identifying safe and non-drug-based therapies,” said Xiangmin Xu, Chancellor’s Professor of anatomy and neurobiology and director of the Center for Neural Circuit Mapping. “Our findings provide a comprehensive and quantitative evaluation of existing preclinical evidence, showing that acupuncture may influence multiple aspects of disease pathology.” An award from the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute supported the work.
