The fur flies in Stephanie McEwan’s class |

Anteater students swarmed to the front of the stage of Stephanie McEwan’s pets and human behavior class for special guest “Venom,” an Alaskan Malamute-Siberian Husky mix. The course introduces the positive roles that companion pets and animals play in human society and how the deep bond between people and animals is beneficial not only to animal wellness but to human society as well. “One Health is a well-established approach that recognizes the health and well-being of people is closely connected to the health and well-being of animals and our shared environment,” said McEwan. “In this regard, human medicine, veterinary medicine, behavioral science, ethology, public health, environmental science and psychological science all benefit from a One Health approach involving collaborations across multiple disciplines and sectors.” |

A new study by UC Irvine researchers identified dopamine loss in a key brain region as a driver of memory decline in Alzheimer’s disease. Restoring dopamine levels, including with the drug Levodopa, improved memory function in preclinical models. The findings suggest a promising new treatment pathway targeting brain circuits, not just toxic proteins. “We did not initially expect dopamine to be affected in Alzheimer’s disease,” said Kei Igarashi, Chancellor’s Fellow and associate professor of anatomy and neurobiology (above). “However, as the evidence accumulated, it became clear that dopamine dysfunction plays a central role in memory impairment.” The National Institutes of Health supported the work. #SpeakUp4Science |

DARPA grant for AI to drive math breakthroughs |
|
|
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has awarded UC Irvine a $2.6 million, three-year grant to study how artificial intelligence tools can accelerate progress in advanced mathematical research. “Understanding AI’s ability to accelerate mathematicians’ research isn’t going to look like giving it problems with known answers,” said Jesse Wolfson, professor of mathematics. “It’s whether it helps a working mathematician make progress on a problem that hasn’t been solved yet. That’s what we aim to measure.” #SpeakUp4Science |
