| This month, UC Irvine is celebrating how artistic expression fosters connection, sparks collaboration and strengthens our community – on campus and beyond. At the Pippin Recreation Center in Middle Earth Housing, a large multi-screen has become more than a place for announcements. It is carrying a new kind of campus history, one shaped by archival research and personal connection. “Connecting Histories” – a new series of public video artworks created by students during spring quarter 2026 – flicker with fragments of memories, campus pathways, archival footage and personal objects. For the student artists, it offers an opportunity to connect their personal stories to the larger history of UC Irvine and make work that moves beyond the classroom and into the everyday life of the university. |

| | ‘Dad bods’ may influence childhood obesity risks |

| A father’s health before and during parenthood, including obesity, diet, stress and mental health, can influence a child’s long-term risk of obesity and related diseases, according to a new study from UC Irvine researchers. Evidence suggests paternal obesity can affect sperm health and biological markers linked to children’s metabolism, appetite regulation and disease risk, but some of these changes may be reversible through weight-loss interventions. “We found that fathers’ health is an important contributor to children’s health through biological, behavioral and environmental pathways,” said corresponding author Matthew Landry (above), assistant professor of population health & disease prevention and a registered dietitian nutritionist. “Obesity is not simply the result of individual choices. This work highlights that obesity risk is 40 to 70 percent heritable and can be passed across generations through complex biological and environmental influences.” |

UC research is helping California take charge of its climate future |

| From natural disasters to rising electricity prices and insurance premiums, the growing impacts of climate change hit close to home for Californians. In 2022, California invested $100 million in a UC-led climate research initiative, harnessing the state’s premier research capabilities to find creative solutions to climate challenges. Four years later, the projects have touched off a new era of collaboration among research scientists, institutions, community members, tribes and policymakers across California. “This program has yielded practical solutions for urgent challenges affecting Californians – including wildfires, extreme heat, water management and coastal change,” said Theresa Maldonado, UC vice president for research and innovation. “The Climate Action Initiative shows that when the state invests in research, communities across California see the benefits.” |
