Art’s ability to reduce stress, enhance moods and lessen symptoms of chronic disease is well documented. Three new buildings on the UCI Health – Irvine campus are providing expansive benefits through their thoughtfully curated art collection – designed and built to improve the health and well-being of those who enter. “When we set out to build the UCI Health – Irvine complex, we wanted an arts program that leverages the amazing artist community across OC and California as an integral part of the early design and part of the healing environment itself,” said Chad Lefteris, president and CEO of UCI Health.

Preventing sun damage to your eyes

As outdoor-loving Southern Californians, we know that exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can do considerable damage to our skin. But did you know that UV exposure may result in skin cancer on delicate eyelid tissue as well as causing disorders within the eye itself? An estimated 3,200 people each year are diagnosed with cancers of the eye and eye socket, and most are melanomas, according to the American Cancer Society. “Long-term, cumulative exposure to UV rays can also cause other damage to the eyes, which makes shielding them every bit as important as protecting our skin,” said Dr. Mohammad Riazi Esfahani, UCI Health ophthalmologist with the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute.

Make the most of your moves

The day may offer more opportunities for healthy movement than you realize. Carrying groceries, walking the dog, gardening, doing laundry, caregiving, playing, reaching, shifting, balancing – these everyday moments engage the body and mind in real ways. And when they happen often, they help support long-term health. Becoming aware of how to move during the day can help make the most of it. Simple changes like picking up the pace on a walk, parking a little farther from your destination or adding a bit more reach, lift or balance along the way can make a difference.
