In the late ’90s, Errol Arkilic earned a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was an odd choice. “Most people do a Ph.D. for exploring the frontiers of knowledge, but I specifically targeted engineering and aerospace engineering because I wanted to build companies that were a result of research coming out of academic labs,” said Arkilic. “I studied that specific field for the purposes of seeing what I could do to develop experience in getting new technologies into the marketplace.” That area has been the focus of Arkilic’s career. He’s now UC Irvine’s chief innovation officer and the executive director of Beall Applied Innovation, an on-campus unit that helps bring research to market. |

Engineering students served on many of the winning teams at the annual Stella Zhang New Venture Competition, hosted by the Paul Merage School of Business’ Beall Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The event highlights UC Irvine students’ creativity and business skills as they are tasked with launching a startup and building a team in just seven months. |

Latest UCI-OC Poll: The American Dream is slipping away |

According to the latest UCI-OC Poll from the School of Social Ecology, nine out of 10 Orange County residents – Republicans and Democrats, renters and homeowners, rich and poor – agree on at least one thing: buying a home is harder today than it was for their parents. “What’s striking here is that residents haven’t given up on the American Dream itself,” said Jon Gould, dean of the School of Social Ecology and director of the UCI-OC Poll. “What they’re questioning is whether Orange County can still be the place where that dream becomes real.” |

Ph.D. candidate envisions a new era of mental health treatment |

It all started at a public pool in Japan. When Lara Taniguchi, a young teen born and raised in Osaka spotted a flyer recruiting volunteers to help children with disabilities learn to swim, it set in motion a journey that would put her on a mission to better understand how our brains work. Now a Ph.D. candidate at the School of Medicine, Taniguchi is on the verge of defending a dissertation centered on the question of why males and females respond differently to early-life stress. “Early-life stress is a major risk factor for developing mental illness later in life, but mental health disorders look very different depending on sex,” said Taniguchi. “My research tries to understand what is happening in the brain to drive that difference.” |
