Confronting global gaps

Alexandre Chan, professor of clinical pharmacy and the study’s corresponding author

More than eight in 10 cancer care providers worldwide say they don’t know enough about integrative oncology to confidently recommend it to patients, according to a new study from UC Irvine researchers. The finding helps explain why yoga, acupuncture, mindfulness training and other evidence-based complementary therapies remain underused in oncology, even as patient demand climbs. “The good news here is that this isn’t a mystery we can’t solve,” said Alexandre Chan (above), professor of clinical pharmacy and the study’s corresponding author. “Providers want to help their patients access these therapies – they just haven’t had the training, the referral pathways or the confidence to do it well. That’s a fixable problem.” Continuing-education requirements, mentorship pairing experienced integrative practitioners with newcomers and searchable resource libraries built into electronic health records can help overcome the hurdles.

‘Congratulations, you are now felony free’

Orange County Superior Court Judge Maria Hernandez congratulates Diego as one of the latest graduates of Young Adult Court.

The words never get old. “Congratulations, you are now felony free.” Orange County Superior Court Judge Maria D. Hernandez repeated them five times, one by one, to five young men sitting before her bench. Each time, the courtroom – packed with family members, children, case managers, attorneys, probation officers, researchers and community supporters – responded with applause and tears. The Orange County Young Adult Court graduation – created through a collaboration between Hernandez and Elizabeth Cauffman, professor of psychology, and others – is a celebration of second chances, bringing the total number of graduates to 76 since the program launched eight years ago.

James Mousaw was about to begin painting on Thanksgiving Day in 2025 when a can of spray paint exploded, burning his shirt and torso. He was admitted to the UCI Health Regional Burn Center with burns covering 40 percent of his body. During his challenging recovery, visits from family, friends and a burn survivor gave him the strength to push forward. “Mental health is important during recovery,” said Mousaw (above, center). “Having burn survivors visit people with similar injuries gives them hope that recovery is possible.”
