| CAR T-cell therapy has transformed cancer care, offering new hope to patients with aggressive blood cancers who once had few treatment options. But for some patients, the powerful immunotherapy can trigger a potentially life-threatening complication that causes brain inflammation, confusion, seizures and other serious neurological symptoms. According to a new study from UC Irvine researchers, mitochondrial dysfunction is a promising target for reducing a serious neurological complication of CAR T-cell therapy in cancer patients. “Our work points to mitochondrial dysfunction as a promising therapeutic target for one of the most serious neurological complications of CAR T-cell therapy,” said Atena Zahedi (above, second from left), lead author and assistant professor of clinical pharmacy practice. “By identifying existing drugs that may be repurposed, we hope to accelerate the development of safer treatment strategies for patients receiving these lifesaving therapies.” |

Charles has been awarded a $2,550,958 grant from the National Institute on Aging to investigate how the daily rhythms of feeling socially connected, or disconnected, shape the way our bodies and minds hold up over time. |

| For the 40 million Americans living with them, a migraine is far more than just a headache. It is a complex neurological disorder that can disrupt work, family life and daily activities, and yet it often remains undiagnosed. Fortunately, significant advances in recent years have expanded treatment options, providing new hope for patients who previously struggled to find relief. “Early intervention is critical,” said Dr. Crystal Jicha, UCI Health neurologist who specializes in migraine, headache and facial pain disorders. “The longer a migraine remains uncontrolled, the more difficult it can become to manage and the greater the risk of disability.” |

| The School of Law has announced the establishment of the Judge Kirk H. Nakamura Law Scholarship Endowment, made possible through the generosity of UC Irvine alumnus Kirk (B.S. ’77) and Judy Nakamura. The scholarship is designed to support UC Irvine Law students who demonstrate an interest in the issues and experiences of Asian Americans in the law and students who have actively engaged with the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association. “Judge Nakamura has been such a leader in the community, and we are grateful to him and Judy for his support of our students committed to making a difference in Orange County and the Asian American community,” said Dean Austen Parrish. “The Orange County Asian American Bar Association has held many events on campus, many of our alums are actively involved with the Association, and it’s terrific to be partnering with them.” |
