| For most of modern biology’s history, progress meant dissecting things, identifying the gene, isolating a protein, naming the cell type. This approach yielded remarkable results – a century of Nobel Prizes, lifesaving medicines and the sequencing of the human genome. But for all that it revealed, reductionist biology struggled to answer a more fundamental question: How does it all work together? That question belongs to systems biology – which explores how life’s interconnected systems lead to healthier people, stronger science and new discoveries – and the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences has just made it the official business of its newest academic department, the first since the school’s four founding departments were created in 1965. “This is a historic moment for our school,” said Frank LaFerla (above), the Dr. Lionel and Fay Ng Dean of the Dunlop School. “Establishing the Department of Systems Biology reflects where the life sciences are headed – toward greater complexity, greater integration and greater impact. We are positioning UC Irvine to lead that future.” |

| The School of Law has been elected to the Order of the Coif at the earliest possible time under the Order rules. It is also the only law school accepted this year into the nation’s most distinguished honors society in legal education. The honor is reserved for law schools that demonstrate the highest standards of legal scholarship, academic rigor and commitment to the development of the legal profession. “From the outset, our goal has been to build a premier law school that achieves the highest levels of academic and professional distinction,” said Austen Parrish, dean of UC Irvine Law. “I am proud of this milestone that is based on, and a reflection of, the scholarly excellence of our faculty, the quality of our curricular program, the excellence of our students and alumni, and the achievements of our administrators, staff and supporters.” |

| Although hearing loss often begins as early as one’s 40s or 50s, most people don’t realize it has happened until much later. “Often it is the people who live with the person who notice hearing loss first,” said Dr. Sonia Sehgal, a geriatrician who leads UCI Health Senior Health Services. | The 2026 HireUC Alumni Career Summits, hosted at UC Irvine and in South San Francisco this year, brought together more than 75 employers with UC alumni from all 10 campuses. The statewide initiative is designed to help attendees explore new careers, grow their professional networks and meet employers actively recruiting UC talent. “The HireUC Alumni Career Summit creates opportunities for UC graduates and employers to connect in meaningful ways while supporting workforce development across California,” said Christina Cadang Chan, convener of Systemwide Alumni Career Engagement. |

| Adriana Urrutia (above), a Ph.D. student at the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health, spent a month researching the impact of dengue in three cities at different altitudes in Nepal. Her research sits at the intersection of climate change, health geography and infectious diseases. As dengue cases continue to rise globally, understanding how changing landscapes and human behaviors influence mosquito populations is critical to preventing a disease that can cause high fever, severe headaches, joint and muscle pain and potentially life-threatening illness. “As researchers, we often arrive with assumptions about what people know or how diseases spread,” said Urrutia. “But the people living through these experiences have knowledge that can fundamentally change how we understand the problem.” |

| | Women’s basketball earns WBCA Academic Top 25 |

| UC Irvine women’s basketball has been named to the 2025-26 WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, which recognizes teams across the nation in their respective divisions with the highest combined GPA of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The Anteaters earned special mention recognition after finishing the academic year with a team grade-point average above a 3.0. The 13-person roster represents eight different majors and combined for a GPA of 3.469 in 2025-26. Individually, six players produced seven 4.0 quarter GPAs for a quarter. |
