| Immunotherapy has transformed outcomes for many cancer patients. Determining why immunotherapy can lose efficacy – and identifying strategies to address that failure – has been among the most challenging problems in cancer research. Rather than testing numerous potential explanations sequentially in the laboratory, UC Irvine researchers have built a mathematical model that captures the key interactions between tumor and immune cells. They used that model to identify the most probable mechanism of resistance. “We integrated two entirely distinct disciplines – mathematics and biology – and enabled them to inform one another,” said Francesco Marangoni, a cancer immunologist and assistant professor of physiology and biophysics. He collaborated closely with John Lowengrub, a Distinguished Professor of mathematics, biomedical engineering and systems biology, as well as Rachel Sousa, the study’s first author and a graduate student researcher in the interdisciplinary mathematical, computational and systems biology program. |

| ICS Summer Academy continues to expand |

| The fifth annual ICS Summer Academy welcomed 172 high school students to UC Irvine for challenging computer science courses led by faculty members. The two-week program immersed students in topics such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity and cryptography, data analytics and software engineering. This year’s academy also marked the successful debut of a new course dedicated to game development and design. “This year, our program experienced continued growth. It is a direct reflection of the brilliant students and exceptional talent in our area, which makes for an incredibly enriching college experience,” said Julie Lindo, director of outreach of the Office of Outreach, Access and Inclusion. “It truly is a special milestone.” |

| After six spine surgeries in 12 years, Dominick Maggio was told there was nothing more that could be done for his hunched over posture, walking difficulty and pain. But UCI Health spine surgeon Dr. Sohaib Z. Hashmi fixed what others said was impossible. “Dom’s experience is not uncommon, being told that they’ll just have to live like this,” said Hashmi. “My entire clinical practice is revision surgery – 90 percent of my patients have had one, 15 or even 20 previous surgeries. They do not have to accept that standard.” Hashmi and an expert team deconstructed and completely rebuilt Maggio’s spine in a 14-hour surgery. Two years later, he is still pain-free and walking tall. |

| UC Irvine researchers have been awarded $3 million from the California Energy Commission to lead a four-year research initiative to transform how the electrical grid harmonizes with privately owned energy assets, such as rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, batteries and electric vehicles. “Utility operators can’t forecast in real time how much extra power your solar PVs are making, or how much energy your EV can consume or offer when you plug it in,” said G.P. Li, Distinguished Professor of electrical engineering and computer science. “Working together with vendors of these devices, an intelligent tool would give utility companies a clearer, real-time picture of energy activity happening behind closed doors.” |
