| This month, UC Irvine is celebrating how thoughtful choices about campus design, future populations and infrastructure can help students thrive, advance discovery and shape a university that continues to serve Orange County. UC Irvine is preparing to break ground on its most ambitious student housing project yet. East Campus Student Apartments Phase 5 will deliver approximately 1,065 new beds in 308 apartment units on 3.2 acres of East Campus. “On-campus housing is one of the most important investments we can make in our students’ success,” said Willie Banks, vice chancellor for student affairs. “When students live on campus, they build friendships, participate more fully in campus life, access support services more easily and develop a stronger sense of belonging. Those experiences help students persist to graduation and make the university community stronger.” |

| Second cohort of climate collaborations |
| The Climate Collaboration – now in its second year with a second cohort of five Climate Collaborations for 2026-27 – will address the growing stresses and disruptions in California brought on by increasing heat, extreme weather, drought and other climate concerns. Tapping into more than a dozen academic schools on campus with disciplinary strengths in climate and sustainability, the Climate Collaboration enables problem-focused projects where external partners with front-line management expertise work alongside UC Irvine’s leading research teams. “The breadth of participation in this year’s call shows how much momentum there is across UC Irvine for collaborative, solutions-oriented climate research,” said Brett Sanders, director of the UC Irvine Climate Collaboration and Chancellor’s Professor of civil and environmental engineering. “These projects bring together faculty with very different areas of expertise and connect them directly with partners who are confronting climate challenges in California every day. Just as importantly, they create opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to work on problems where their research can have a tangible impact on communities, infrastructure and decision-making.” |

| UCI Health has expanded its robot-assisted surgery program with the Hugo Robotic-Assisted Surgery System, becoming the first health system on the West Coast to use the technology for patient care. Dr. David Lee, UCI Health urologic oncologist, successfully performed a prostatectomy by using the modular system on Aug. 18. The patient went home the same day and is recovering well. The milestone builds on more than two decades of robot-assisted surgery at UCI Health, and it personifies the academic health system’s continued commitment to advancing minimally invasive surgical care to support education, research and quicker patient recoveries. |
