UC Irvine places eighth among nation’s best public universities in U.S. News rankings

For the 12th year running, UC Irvine has landed among the top 10 public universities in the country, placing eighth in U.S. News & World Report’s 2027 list of “Best Colleges” – its highest public-university ranking in over a decade. “We are all very pleased that U.S. News & World Report has once again recognized the distinguished excellence of our teaching, research and public service,” said UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman. “Being in the top 10 for the 12th consecutive year is especially gratifying in light of our commitment to inclusive excellence and educating our state’s best and most talented students regardless of their financial circumstances.”

More opportunities. Fewer cars

Students moving to campus

The conventional math seems simple: More students should mean more cars. At UC Irvine, the numbers tell a different story. Over the past two decades, the university has welcomed thousands of additional students while expanding its research and academic health enterprises. Yet campus traffic has moved in the opposite direction. Since 2016, the student population has grown 14 percent, while the number of vehicles coming to campus has declined 47 percent. “The best transportation investment isn’t a road or a parking structure. It’s housing,” said Ron Fleming, executive director of transportation and distribution services. “When students live where they learn, we reduce daily vehicle trips, strengthen campus life and lessen impacts on the surrounding community. That’s exactly the kind of long-term thinking that guides our planning.”

The AI layer powering research

Picture of the Swarup Lab

At the heart of UC Irvine's efforts to understand Alzheimer's disease is a quiet technological shift. ZotGPT Gateway, the university’s next-generation AI API platform, has become a meaningful tool for researchers like Vivek Swarup. Inside his lab in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, scientists are working to understand what happens at the molecular level in a brain with Alzheimer’s disease. The partnership between Swarup’s lab and the OIT team running ZotGPT is a straightforward example of UC Irvine’s own tools supporting the institution’s research from the inside out. In this collaboration, Alzheimer’s research is moving faster than ever before.

Neurointerventionalist Dr. Ichiro Yuki found a better way to block blood flow while navigating the brain’s delicate vessels. To move this technology beyond the lab, Yuki is learning entirely different disciplines: patents, funding, regulatory navigation, and building an enterprise to produce and test the material. At UC Irvine, Beall Applied Innovation became his entry point.
