Creating a digital twin, personalizing physical rehabilitation devices, and monitoring the impact and safety of artificial intelligence were among the topics discussed at the inaugural Engineering+ Society Institute on AI (Proper AI) Symposium. The institute brings together professors and innovators in engineering, social sciences, art, business, and public policy who meet regularly and work on collaborative projects. “This is a prime example of activation energy – bringing together people in other areas of inquiry so we can get a better hold of challenges and come up with better solutions,” said Faryar Jabbari, Samueli School of Engineering interim dean.

Dialoguing across difference

This fall, a small cohort of first-year UC Irvine social sciences students will learn to lead difficult conversations with empathy, curiosity and respect. The Dialogue Lab, an academic and leadership program, will guide students through a three-quarter course series focused on civil discourse, dialogue facilitation and conflict navigation. By the program’s end, participants will put those principles into practice as Campus Dialogue Ambassadors. “The program aims to bring students with diverse perspectives to the table, creating opportunities to build understanding, navigate difficult conversations, and find more constructive ways to engage across differences,” said Teresa Neighbors, social sciences director of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging programs. “They’ll put those skills into practice through collaborative problem-solving and civic engagement, helping create a campus culture where differences become an opportunity for dialogue and shared action.”

Award to research the genetics of diabetes and obesity

Wei Li, Grace B. Bell Endowed Chair and professor of biological chemistry

What makes people genetically prone to diabetes and obesity? That is the central question of a $7.8 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health. The funding will support a multidisciplinary study called HERITAGE, led by Wei Li (above), Grace B. Bell Endowed Chair and professor of biological chemistry. The award reflects the long-standing collaboration between the Li Lab and the UC Irvine Diabetes Center with co-investigators Dr. Qin Yang, professor of medicine and center director, and Ya Cui, assistant professor of pathology.
