World’s most powerful laser

Franklin Dollar, research lead and professor of physics and astronomy

The National Science Foundation has awarded a round of funding toward a total of $13.7 million to advance the development of the world’s most powerful laser into its final design phase. The NSF Optical Parametric Amplifier Linelaser facility is being developed with participation by UC Irvine researchers and will serve as a shared resource for the global scientific community in fields including particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. According to Franklin Dollar (above), research lead and professor of physics and astronomy, the extraordinarily high power of the NSF OPAL laser will unlock new capabilities in areas such as particle acceleration and advanced light sources, laser-driven nuclear physics and laboratory astrophysics and planetary physics. “We are working to generate the strongest electric and magnetic fields ever generated in a laboratory setting, conditions only found in the most extreme places in the universe, to learn how to harness it for high-energy ion acceleration,” Dollar said.

Voters face ballot full of traps, tricks and trillion-dollar stakes

Jon Gould (third from left) broke it down for Orange County voters who packed a Corona del Mar senior center on Oct. 13: the ballot is long, the propositions are complicated, and some of them are designed that way on purpose. The dean of the School of Social Ecology was a featured expert at the LAist Orange County Ballot Cram Session, a free event hosted by reporters Jill Replogle and Destiny Torres at the OASIS Senior Center. Gould and Michael Moodian of Chapman University walked the audience through 13 statewide propositions, two Board of Supervisors runoffs, and a ranked-choice voting measure in Irvine – pulling no punches along the way.

Prostate cancer and the BRCA gene link

To better understand their risk for prostate cancer, men should know their family medical history, said Dr. Mohammed D. Shahait, a UCI Health urologist. Many people know that the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations increase the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. What is less known is that these same genetic mutations are also risk factors for prostate cancer, particularly in its more aggressive forms.

Disability Employment Awareness

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a month-long recognition of the positive contributions that people with disabilities make to the national workforce. In honor of this month, the campus community is invited to learn more about the faculty, students and staff who have dedicated themselves to making UC Irvine an accessible and inclusive place to teach, learn and work.

The UC Board of Regents has launched the inaugural UC Regents Innovation Awards to honor 23 faculty, researchers, inventors and entrepreneurs chosen from nominees across the 10 UC campuses and three affiliated national laboratories. The awards recognize colleagues who are making a difference in people’s lives in California and around the world. Three UC Irvine researchers were lauded for their achievements: Michael Leon, UC Irvine emeritus professor of neurobiology and behavior, for helping create Memory Air; Chang C. Liu, professor of biomedical engineering, for his invention of OrthoRep; and Jean-Claude Falmagne, research professor of cognitive sciences, for pioneering modern cognitive theory that explains how students achieve mastery.

The 2025 UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge raised over $1.5 million, funding grants for more than 30 pilot projects (since 2017, the UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge has funded 190 projects). Among those projects funded are ones from the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. Claudia Benavente, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences; Alexandre Chan, professor of clinical pharmacy; and Darci Trader, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, received awards for their projects.
