Before there was homecoming – before there were even many UCI alums – school officials held the All-University Alumni Picnic for several years, beginning in May 1964. Faculty, staff, students and alumni from UCI and other UC campuses brought their families to lunch al fresco, play games, socialize and catch the energy of the developing campus. Just about everyone got into the spirit. Wayne Crawford, UCI’s first athletics director, organized a sack race. Additional fun activities included an egg toss and a watermelon eating contest.
While the simple picnics are a tradition long gone, today’s alumni can participate in UCI’s Homecoming Weekend, this year on March 2 and 3. For more info, visit engage.alumni.uci.edu/homecoming18.
